https://youtube/watch?v=h-d4UbR-2K8 What are TELOMERES and what do they tell you about your health?? Telomeres are the endcaps on the DNA on all of the 46 chromosomes in every cell of your body. Our body is amazing in that our cells are constantly going through a process of renewal, with small baby cells being created regularly to replace older cells that die off. Each time your cells replicate themselves the telomeres tend to shorten slightly. The shorter the telomere, the higher your physiologic age. In other words, if you can keep your telomeres longer through lifestyle and diet, then you essentially lengthen your lifespan. Telomerase is an enzyme that triggers the renewal process for telomeres, and prevents and decreases telomere shortening. Longer telomeres are associated with longer, healthier lives and multiple studies have looked at shorter telomeres and their association with most chronic modern diseases such as cancer and heart disease. Lower telomerase levels and shorter telomeres have even been linked to osteoporosis and bone health, and telomere length may even be predictive of the presence of osteoporosis! A 2007 study reveals the correlation between telomere length and osteoporosis. Scientists studied leukocyte telomere length in 2,150 women between the ages of 18 and 79. The researchers made proper adjustments for various factors such as age, hormone replacement therapy, smoking, etc., and made this shocking conclusion: “Clinical osteoporosis was associated with shorter telomeres, suggesting that telomere length can be used as a marker of bone aging,” and “Shortened leukocyte telomere length is independently associated with a decrease in BMD [bone mineral density] and the presence of osteoporosis in women.” 1 (Valdes, A.M., et al. “Telomere length in leukocytes correlates with bone mineral density and is shorter in women with osteoporosis.” Osteoporosis Int. 2007. 18:1203-1210.) What can you do to help keep your telomerase levels up, and in concert, your telomere length long?? Exercise is key! Regular exercisers telomere lengths were shown to measure at a length 10 years younger than their biological age! Eat an alkalizing diet (vs. acidic) with lots of fruits and veggies, especially greens! Keep the sugar consumption low and blood sugar stable! Keep your Vitamin D levels optimized. Eat lots of fruits/veggies high in antioxidants such as Vitamin C! Get lots of Omega 3 fats in your diet such as fatty fish and plant sources such as chia seeds, flaxseed, walnuts and greens. Omega 3 fats are anti-inflammatory and most Americans diets are woefully low in them! Practice stress relieving meditation or why not try yoga!
