Gender stereotypes harm men and women; its the exact reason I started my research into the oppressive effects masculinity can have on young men. We live in a society that encourages men to stay silent, and not ask for help, because thats what real men do. Men are encouraged to stand their ground, man up, and be tough. Men who do not conform to these stereotypical definitions of masculinity are labelled gay. They are feminised, for not being man enough. To even question the normality and authority of homophobia within masculinity is to be labelled gay. If we want young men to feel expressing not only painful thoughts like sadness and grief, but also happiness, affection, and love, then this must stop. People should be allowed to be themselves, and not sanctioned for not falling accurately enough into a pathetic binary. A greater acceptance of individual diversity will lead to a healthier society. This is a step in the right direction towards gender equality. If nothing else, I hope it gets people thinking and talking. #HeForShe
