i sat on a panel recently, talking about game and world design. the last question from the moderator (as you can expect) is the how do you break into the industry question not only a cliché, but a useless question, too. for a number of reasons, any advice someone gives you about breaking-in is interesting only to someone with very narrow circumstances. all advice is anecdotal. i cant tell you how to break in. i can only tell you how i got my first job. if you know how to write or draw, i can tell you what im looking for. i cant for a second help you get a job at dragon pie games. secondly, the entire break-in attitude implies theres this magical barrier to entry. guess what. apply for a job that pays less than minimum wage and youll probably get it. kill yourself for someone else to make a profit and youll keep that job. thats not really a secret. but of course the people in attendance get all giddy and the writers (who love to talk about themselves) jumped at the first chance to give their sage advice about how, i once wrote a ten-room adventure for their gencon pre-release event. for free. in 24 hours. next thing i know, im packing boxes in their warehouse in exchange for obsidian gate boosters. [segue] i suppose advice is a lot like snake oil, except no one makes money off of it. unless they write one of those advice books. and then. well. i guess its exactly like snake oil. and equally useful at curing lumbago.
