i took a drive down to benone tonight to see the crowds and have a laugh to myself as the hype surrounding the aurora reached fever pitch, there were folks trying to take a photograph to the north in the full glare of car headlights, cars stuck in the sand etc,as an aurora photographer perhaps a few tips of viewing the northern lights might be of benefit to those people who dont know what they are looking for; 1;we currently have an 80% illuminated moon,no use for viewing auroras as its simply too bright,,,. 2;the KP number is not the be all and end all,you need the BZ to be south and in the minuses(spaceweather). 3;too many people on social media and the mainstream press have blown all this out of proportion, experienced aurora hunters like myself martin mckenna, paul martin etc have spend years out to all hours in the cold sometimes all night and built up an intuitive skill that says whether it on or not, tonight was definitely not on! 4;its always nice to introduce people to the wonders of the aurora and i was heading to musseden tonight with my friend Mari Ward so Mari could photograph her first northern lights but as the day wore on,i knew it was a futile exercise, and thats why you dont see me posting on here much telling folk to head to the coast, the coast can also be dangerous in the dark late at night especially when people dont really know the terrain very well and one slip could be fatal,so take care folks. rant over!!
