if I were in charge of improving academia, heres what Id do: change the process of earning a Ph.D from “study a tiny problem in massive detail and learn something new to find three experiments, successfully reproduce their setups, and fail to reproduce the results. we could then downgrade researchers who ran studies that were repeatedly shown to be crap, and focus more on solid results than on publishing. a researcher who publishes one solid finding a year will be rewarded far more than one who publishes 5 that could not be reproduced. lets spend more effort breaking ideas we shouldnt believe than on finding new things to believe.
