in a recent post, i reflected on how some of the loss i have been experiencing is due to my particular stage of life. i imagine that my mother, who in the past few years has said goodbye to both of her parents, her brother, and her first husband, has been feeling similarly introspective and wrestling with feelings of sadness and doubt. in addition, last year, one of her precious grandchildren was diagnosed with brain cancer at the tender age of nine. and yet, even in the face of these stunning heartbreaks -- and all my life, really -- she more than anyone has reminded me what hope looks like. shown me what love looks like, what generosity means. when my kids were growing up, she lived 300 miles away, but you would never guess it from looking through our photo albums: there she is at every turn, every birthday, every graduation, until her own health issues made the distance unmanageable. just now, as i am writing this note in honor of *her* birthday, she sent me a text saying just thought you could use a smile. mom, i think it so fitting that you were born right before the days start getting longer and brighter; you embody the spirit of this time of year in more ways than one. wishing you joy, light, happiness, love, smiles, family -- everything your heart desires -- today and all the days of your life.
