in the past two days, i have seen a lot of posts in regards to depression, suicide, etc. as was to be expected with the sudden loss of a beloved public figure. what im having trouble with reading are negative comments calling out those who suffer as being selfish or taking the easy way out. im sorry to tell you folks this, but that is such an ignorant, selfish way of thinking. people who suffer from depression suffer from mental illness. ILLNESS. would you treat someone with cancer the same way you treat those with depression? no? well, maybe you should change your way of thinking. those who are depressed are not just sad. yes, there is a profound sadness that comes with depression. sadness that is paired with feelings of hopelessness, self hatred, inadequacy, & physical pain, to name a few. someone who battles this cannot just smile & feel better. they cant simply call someone & express their feelings & let it all out. depression is not easy. people who suffer feel ashamed. most dont sleep at night or even lose appetite to the point of not eating at all & making themselves sick. those who suffer often become recluse & cannot find any glimpse of light in their lives. depression doesnt last a few days or weeks, but months & years if gone unnoticed & untreated, which can lead to suicide. those who suffer often wear a mask when in public or around those closest to them, but cannot hide their pain when they are alone. an infected mind is a dangerous thing. it is a constant inner battle every day. those who are depressed eventually become apathetic & if they feel anything at all, it is excruciating pain in their heart, mind, & body. someone who is thinking of taking their own life isnt thinking about the lives they are going to influence or the pain that they are going to inflict on their loved ones, they are only wanting to end the pain that they have lived with for so long. they arent in their right mind & arent realizing that things will get better & that they are choosing a permanent solution for a temporary problem. depression can be inherited through genetics or developed on its own. it can be influenced by time of year, emotional trauma, etc. there is no black & white way of looking at it. unfortunately, those who have never suffered or known those who have suffered may not understand the severity or the fact that it is not a choice that a person can make to be depressed or not. depression & thoughts of suicide are not a joke. those who seek attention by faking this illness take away the help & support needed for those who cannot find the strength to help themselves. if you know someone who may be suffering from depression, please get them help. they most likely wont seek it out themselves. attached is a talk i have often read & pondered on by elder jeffrey r. holland titled, like a broken vessel. maybe it can shed some light where i have been unable to. as someone who has suffered on & off for years, take it from me. it is one of the darkest & most difficult things a human being can ever go through. even if you do not understand, please keep your negative comments to yourself. Heaven knows that no one needs to read or hear these hateful, tactless remarks. for those of you who made it to the end, thank you. just something i felt needed to be said. putting my soapbox away for now.(:
