indoctrination Indoctrination is characterized as any teaching that fails to respect the potential and actual rationality and autonomy of the learner. Indoctrination, it is said, uses “nonrational methods of instruction” (e.g., hypnosis, subliminal suggestion, authority, tradition), or operates upon subject matters immune to rational explanation or adjudication (e.g., astrology). It either intends and/or results in damage to the student’s capacity for freedom or reason. The interesting question today is whether religious, moral, and political education are more than indoctrination. greenwood dictionary of education p : 234
