life continues to amaze me with its weirdness. i suppose that is why i want to write weird fiction. back in college in the very early eighties, at csu hayward (now csu east bay) i had a short story professor named n.v.m. gonzalez, who was from the Philippines and who, ironically for an english teacher, did not speak very good english. it was good enough to discuss the nuances of fiction, though. after the third story i wrote and read aloud for his class he recommended i read jorge luis borges because, as mr. gonzalez said, his fiction was weird, like yours. the rest of the class tittered because they really did think i was, like, weird, dude, but i knew what he meant. borges, next to baum, has been my favorite author ever since. come to find out since, when i was looking for past mentors to read my book, mr. gonzalez died in the early nineties, but not before receiving the highest prize available for literature in his native land. who knew i was being taught by a literary giant? not me. thank you, mr. gonzalez, for calling me weird. it was actually one of the most helpful critiques ive ever received, and i love borges deeply to this day.
