lilac time Finances were tight for me when I was going through my divorce, especially since I was unemployed at the time. Then I got news that the bank was going to foreclose on my house. I began to feel as though God had abandoned me. One afternoon, an older woman came to my door. She said she’d lived there years before and wanted to look around. She asked if the lilacs she’d planted in the backyard were still there. My daughter and I had always loved those lilacs. I escorted the woman into the garden, and we both smiled as we gazed down at the beautiful purple flowers. The stress I’d been feeling seemed to melt away. Suddenly, I began to feel hopeful again. It was not long after her visit that the bank changed its mind about the foreclosure, and I went back to school so I could start a new career. I’m sure my luck began to turn around because an angel came to me and reminded me how to smile. JOANNA CROUSE, MICHIGAN
