loops as material elements used in the arc piece "the moon seen - TopicsExpress

loops as material elements used in the arc piece "the moon seen in daylight described during night" reconstructed for camera with sound from another similar piece as surrogate. the original performance from this last saturday was purposefully not documented. the three loops were projected in to the main space of the warehouse where a long white sheet had been hung over a metal bar suspended from a ceiling beam located about eight feet from the back wall. the left and right circle projections cast over the back wall as the center circle cast on the slowly moving sheet that was being blown by a large metal box fan from behind. on the fan rested an low open tuned guitar filling the room with a very loud bass heavy vibration into the air of the space. coupled with sound recordings from a 1/4 inch tape player. both were made mostly out of view by the sheet and the darkening of all light sources in the building prior. on the ground to the right of the suspended sheet i had built a small circular altar with a collection of material elements to be interacted with during the performance. the base of the altar was a large circle of flat wood painted black with a series of concentric circles at one end, bordered by two long curved iron arcs resting on the ground in front of it. at head of the altar was an open tea kettle with steam rising from boiled water with damiana leaves and stems. behind this was a knife sharpening block with a recently sharpened razor blade resting on top of it, next to a spool of string. in the center was a small metal bowl with a candle mounted inside it, to the left of it was a large ceramic bowl filled with lighter fluid and to the right a large metal bowl filled with water. next to the ceramic bowl were two emptied wine bottles filled with water and a tea made from damiana. after a period the candle was lit. a length of the string was used to bind my own hands closely together and cut with the razor blade that was then held in my teeth so as the blade rested lightly on the top of my tongue for the rest of the performance. the hands were soaked in the bowl with lighter fluid, moved to the candle where they ignited, moved to the bowl of water where they were extinguished in varying intervals of time. this was repeated over and over, developing a sort of pace. elements past this are not recalled as easily as i was in an out of a trance state at this point. the bottles were emptied evenly over the different bowls of the altar and the string cut from the hands. at the end of the piece i left the altar and broke the bottles in the street outside the space as projections and sound filled the room for a time. the performance lasted about 8 to 10 minutes.
