mcndirect/showsubject.aspx?id=58431 MCN 8/12/2014 Convert Bishoy Armya Lawyer to MCN: Detention of Bishoy inside ================================================== execution chamber is psychological terrorism =================================== Lawyer Karam Ghobrial Cairo, December 8/MCN/ by Hekmat Hanna The continued detention of Bishoy Armya, formerly Mohamed Hijazi, inside an execution chamber is illegal and qualifies as torture, Bishoy’s lawyer Karam Ghobrial told MCN. Ghobrial told MCN that Bishoy told him Nov. 23 that he had been hit, tortured and detained in an execution chamber after he had left the deliberation session. He also filed reports to the public prosecutor and the president of the national council for human rights against the interior minister and the prisons department director. Ghobrial said that Bishoy is ill-treated by the officials of Tora prison administration and the ordinary employees. He said that they told Bishoy that he is “infidel” because he left Islam, and they have hit and insulted him. He mentioned that the arrest of Bishoy is illegal, which nullifies all procedures of the case. He added that when the police officer filed the report he said that he received information about presence of Bishoy in the Minya’s agriculture syndicate. He mentioned that Bishoy was arrested without a prosecution’s permit, which nullifies the arrest procedures, because the arrest should be based on a court’s judgment or a public prosecution’s permit. Ghobrial said, “Bishoy was arrested Dec. 2, 2013 on charges of photographing demonstrations without permission and publishing false news. He was arrested with a number of journalists at the headquarters of the agriculture syndicate in Minya. The prosecutor released all journalists except Bishoy, although a journalist said that she is the owner of the camera and she photographed the demonstration of the Muslim Brotherhood to publish it in a regional newspaper.” “He was detained and accused of photographing demonstrations without permission and publishing false news. The prosecution called for his punishment according to the Articles 80 and 120, which stipulate punishment of anyone publishes false news, aiming to destabilize the state, which means presence of the intention of committing the action,” he added. Ghobrial mentioned that the psychological conditions of Bishoy are bad, but he adheres to the Christ and to his position and he knows well that he is ill-treated because he became a Christian. Karam Ghobrial concluded his words by expressing his deep dissatisfaction, because although the civil status law and the provisions of the constitution stipulate freedom of the personal data change including the religion, the courts refuse to recognize such change. He added that Bishoy’s case was rejected by the supreme administrative court and he filed another case before the constitutional court.
