message from our Secretary:- SERTUC LGBT NETWORK Dear Colleagues, The X-press Yourself against austerity opening in London on Friday 24 January at the White Rabbit, Stoke Newington Church St N16, hosted by UNITE London & Eastern Region LGBT Committee was a great success. I spoke at the opening as SERTUC LGBT Network, Secretary and attached is a photograph from the evening with me next to the artist and UNITE member Francisco Gomez de Villaboa in centre. The photograph was taken by Luxxxer. I am also pleased to say that QX magazine previewed to exhibition and gave mention to UNITE. The exhibition will be running till 4 March. Last Thursday (30th) pictures from the exhibition were shown in Ipswich at the East of England Co-op Education Centre – Francisco attended and talked about the work. The successful evening was hosted by UNITE London & Eastern Region with support from Ipswich & District Trades Union Council and Suffolk LGBT Network. Attached is a picture of Francisco speaking at the event. Last month the SERTUC LGBT Network hosted an informal presentation to a full house by a visiting LGBTQ Portuguese artist and activist Antonio Onio at TUC Congress House. The presentation included Antonio showing examples of his work and answering questions from the audience. His talk was inspiring about ways of resisting. The evening was opened with a speech by Maria Exall – TUC LGBT Committee, Chair who encouraged people to be involved in fighting austerity and to join a Trade Union. There were TUC LGBT leaflets and copies of the Morning Star available. Attached is a photograph of Antonio with Peter Purton – TUC LGBT Policy Officer on the evening. LGBT History Month – our event with TUC LGBT Committee this year is on 19 February just two weeks away – I will be one of the keynote speakers as Secretary for the Network. Flyers have been printed by the TUC and we need to as in previous years get them out to venues. Anton Johnson will be doing his usual taking bundles round London LGBTQ venues between Monday and the 19th – if anyone would like to help him please reply to this email. If you would like flyers there are plenty and you can contact me or Peter Purton at TUC to arrange either delivery or collection – again just reply to this email. Thank you. Peter Purton will be writing an article about LGBT History Month for our daily paper the Morning Star – morningstaronline.co.uk David Sharkey (UNITE) SERTUC LGBT Network, Secretary
