These workshops are content-driven, and will help bring history, science, art, and culture to life — demonstrating real-world ideas and thinking that educators at every level can bring back to their students and communities. Several sessions have already reached capacity, including: · U.S. Department of Education – 50 educators and members of the Department will explore the inner-workings of the Lyndon Baines Johnson building, followed by a reception and discussion of some of the most pressing issues in teaching today. · Ford’s Theatre – A guided exploration of the Fords Theater museum and the house where President Lincoln died coupled with a workshop on “Making Oratory a Part of Your Classroom.” · Library of Congress – An investigation into primary sources and an opportunity to work with Library of Congress staff on strategies for their use in the K-12 classroom. · United States Holocaust Memorial Museum – View a special exhibit and participate in an interactive model lesson that touches on history, English, and tolerance. Other pre-conference events nearing capacity include workshops at the following locations: The Arts · Smithsonian American Art Museum –Learn how to connect art and literature using hands-on strategies in the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s galleries. Discover how analyzing artwork fosters transferable skills such as developing evidence-based interpretations, expressing ideas verbally, improving vocabulary, and synthesizing information. · Smithsonian Hirshhorn Museum – The modern art museum and sculpture garden will open its doors to educators to explore the intersection of visual art, creative writing, and performance through “Slam Poetry!” · Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery – An interactive approach to the museum’s collection that will explore unique ways to engage students to analyze portraits. Participants will learn how to read portraiture and the use of art as a springboard into a more in-depth discussion about biography and history. Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage – Get a preview of the standard world music certification workshop through short exercises in music identification, listening, and kinetic movement, based on examples from the Smithsonian Folkways music collection. Science National Geographic Society – Start with a backstage look at National Geographic Society with an exclusive screening of Mysteries of the Unseen World, a new film produced by National Geographic Cinema Ventures, and then join National Geographic staff for an exhilarating round of cool demos and classroom-ready activities. · Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum – Discover all there is to learn about teaching aeronautics and physics to students of every age. History · Smithsonian National Museum of American History – Join the National Museum of American History educators for a hands-on presentation on building students’ inquiry skills by using objects and drama in the classroom, integrating science in social studies, and developing historical investigations. Early Education · Smithsonian Natural History Museum/Early Enrichment Center – Build connections between complex ideas and everyday life by exploring objects and collections that can be brought to life in the classroom. Film · The Newseum – A tour of this interactive museum of news and journalism, followed by a preview of a new Davis Guggenheim film on teaching, “TEACH.” Educators will also enjoy a panel, consisting of a teacher from the film, a NBCT, and a Washington Post journalist on what it takes to TEACH, moderated by the Newseum’s director of education. · Disneynature – An unprecedented early look at the Disneynature Film “Bears,” a world-class nature film in the making. Dr. Lizabeth Fogel, director of education at the Walt Disney Corporation, will host the session. “We are pleased to partner with the National Board to ensure that Teaching & Learning is an enriching, hands-on and thought-provoking experience,” said Daniel Edelson, vice president for education, National Geographic Society. “We know when we connect top education and thought leaders nationwide with exhilarating resources in geography and science, we can inspire a generation of students to engage in STEM-related careers, and also to experience a broader understanding of the world they live in and share with people from vastly different countries and cultures.” Thursday, March 13, will be a day of exploration and creativity for all pre-conference attendees — with one-of-a-kind film examinations, historical tours, model lessons, demo classroom activities, and dialogues with fellow educators, policymakers, and researchers. The workshops are specifically designed for professionals of all backgrounds and experience levels and will examine a diverse range of subjects. “We’re honored to screen Guggenheim’s latest film, TEACH, and encourage discussion through our panel of ways to inspire the next generation of teacher-leaders,” said Barbara McCormack, director of education at the Newseum. “And, we are thrilled to be part of Teaching & Learning’s inaugural conference in D.C.” Booking for the Teaching & Learning 2014 pre-conference is now open to all registered attendees.
