my grandmother told me this story....my mother and father dated a year, and broke up, my father told my mother he wasnt good enough for her, and he left the city to go work in the oil fields of Illinois...my mother was living with her mother and father and working and knew she was pregnant...she never told anyone, not her friends, not her parents, no one....my brother was 4 weeks premature, so my mother thought she was just ill from eating too many peaches, and delivered my brother at home...when she yelled to her mother from the bathroom, my grandmother heard the baby cry as she opened the door...she yelled for my mothers father and they helped mom into bed, the baby, my brother had already been born and was healthy and crying...my grandmother called the doctor who just lived down the street and he was there in minutes....my brother was a month early, but healthy and started nursing immediately, my grandmother said the phone rang and it was a friend of my mothers, my grandmother said she didnt even think of what she was saying, she said, sorry Barbara cant come to the phone, she just had a baby boy, and he is beautiful.....my grandmother was a very, matter of fact person....she never asked my mom, why didnt you tell us, or what is going on, she just fell in love with my brother from the minute he was born and went on as it was as normal as anything for her daughter to deliver a baby in the house....soon the work got out in the neighborhood and the neighbors all were stopping by.....my grandfather told my mother...you must call Jim, my dad and tell him.....so mom called my dad who was that weekend staying at his mothers in Illinois and told him she had just had their baby....my dad was there in an hour....my grandmother said he ran in the house, and picked up the baby and said oh Barbie, he has my toes....he looks just like me, and they named him James Earl Vaughan Jr......my mother and father were meant to be together, and I am sure if my brother had not been born then, they would of still worked their way back together somehow....I asked my mother later why she never told my dad, and she said, I knew your dad loved me, but I just wanted him to come back and know he had a reason to stay....my mom only gained 10 pounds when she was pregnant with my brother, so no one noticed she was pregnant, with me she only gained 12 pounds....so I understand why it went unnoticeable...it also explained to me why my mother always counseled pregnant girls and their boyfriends, or husbands, this was before planned parenthood, somehow, her name spread, as did my grandmothers, and many times we would get a knock on the door and mom would talk to parents and their daughters, or fathers and their sons.....my mother and grandmother never judged....only told their story, and gave names of churches and other organizations that they could talk to....always gave them options and told them they were not alone....but I have never thought....how strong my mom was for those 8 months..telling no one....keeping it to herself, and being strong and having faith, that it would work out....all miracles do
