newseastwest/dont-make-the-mistake-of-migrating…/ I have to say that the person who wrote this article seems to have come from a place of privilege that most people on the planet cannot relate to; she seems to expect everything to be handed to her on a silver platter. Many refugees and immigrants in Canada and elsewhere come from dark, painful experiences. Many of us leave our countries, which we loved, not because of a whim or naiveté, but because we were imprisoned and tortured. Many of us were fired from our jobs, persecuted, etc. simply because we spoke our minds and stood up to governments abuse of power. When we landed in Canada, we wept both tears of joy and sorrow; joy because we knew no one will now knock on our door at 3AM and take us and beat and burn us and shoot us in some God forsaken place, and sorrow because we knew we would probably never see the place of our birth again. I worked at restaurants as a waitress for about 10 years. I didnt have money to go to university, even though I had been a 90-percent average student; I knew I had to work very hard to support my family, but I was okay because I felt safe. Now, 23 years after my arrival in Canada, after very hard work, I am a bestselling writer and respected human-rights activist. No body handed anything to me for free; I worked my bottom off for every single thing I have achieved with very little support from others. I am not rich, but I can, still with lots of hard work, put food on the table and be able to eat it without being bombed. Canada gave me a home when I literally had nowhere to go. I guess how one sees Canada, like everything else, is a matter of perspective. Thank you Canada. I would have been dead a long time ago if you had not taken me in.
