Why we were not part of N100b disbursement – ASUU Contrary to reports that Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) boycotted the disbursement of the N100 billion released by the Federal Government to improve infrastructure in Nigerian universities, the union has come out to say it was never invited by the government. In an exclusive interview with Saturday Independent in Ekpoma, Edo State, the chairman of Ambrose Alli University chapter of ASUU, Prof. Fred Esumeh, said government only invited pro-chancellors and vice-chancellors without reference to the union. He said the disbursement was actually due to ASUU’s objection to government’s initial intention to centrally award contract for the utilisation of the fund that would have culminated in building a bed space for as high as N1.2 million. ASUU, according to him, is also dismayed, that 70 per cent of the said N100 billion was taken from Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), thereby incapacitating the agency to perform its statutory functions. “More than 70 per cent of the N100 billion that has been released was taken from TETFUND, which is supposed to be an intervention agency on its own in the university system.
