notes that 200 years ago today, Gen. Andrew Jackson was in big trouble. His expedition against the British-allied Red Stick Creeks had dwindled to a single regiment whose 60-day enlistments were about to run out. He decided to take the offensive while he still had troops to act. Leaving Fort Strother (in present-day Alabama on the Coosa River) with fewer than 200 militiamen and about 200 Cherokees and allied Creeks, he headed for the village of Emuckfaw. On Jan. 22, the Red Sticks attacked. Although repulsed, they inflict enough casualties that Jackson was forced to retreat. On the the way back to Fort Strother, the Americans were again attacked on Jan. 24, 1814, while crossing Enotachopo Creek. It didnt go well, although Jackson managed to avoid disaster. A quarter of his force had been killed or wounded. It would be mid-March before Jackson, newly reinforced, could take the field again.
