now I want to know how and why research can have received ethics approval to test new antibiotics on unconscious patients AND how neonates can be used in a trial by being given/tested with probiotics without parental consent in NICU units? WHEN the ethics guidelines state this : Respect for persons 4.3 Every person has the right to be treated with respect. (See also the Code of Rights, Right 1(1).) 4.4 Respect for people, and for their rights, incorporates at least two fundamental principles. (a) Respect for autonomy requires that those who are capable of deliberation about their personal goals should be treated with respect for their capacity for self – determination. This may apply on an individual or collective basis. (b) Protection of people, particularly those with impaired or diminished autonomy, requires that those who are dependent or vulnerable be afforded security against harm. (See also the Code of Rights, Right 7(2) and (3); and ‘Vulnerable people’, paragraphs 5.28–5.35.) BOTH THESE GROUPS ARE VULNERABLE!! AND.... 1.1 Justice requires that, within a population, there is a fair distribution of the benefits and burdens of participation in a study and, for any participant, a balance of burdens and benefits. Accordingly, investigators must: (a) avoid imposing on particular groups an unfair burden of participation in intervention studies (eg, vulnerable members of a community should not bear disproportionate burdens of studies from which other members of the community are intended to benefit) (b) design studies so that the inclusion and exclusion conditions for participants are fair. (See also the criteria in ‘Inclusion and exclusion of participants’, paragraphs 5.26–5.27.) AVOID IMPOSING ON PARTICULAR GROUPS AN UNFAIR BURDEN OF PARTICIPATION (E.G VULNERABLE GROUPS!!! Our society is turning into what?? I am horrified that this is happening in our world/my world.
