#occupyslu #saintlousuniversity #saintlouis #FergusonOctober I dont usually go on facebook rants, but I would appreciate it so much if you could take the time to read what I have to say about the occupy slu protesting and my experience- whether you are a member of the SLU community or not. I am all for freedom of speech and I will always support someone who wants to make their opinion/viewpoints known as long as it is done in a way that respects the people around them. The attached video is an example of some of the disrespect that has been directed towards other individuals who may have an opposing viewpoint. REGARDLESS of your opinion, the gentleman in the video was sharing his OPINION (note, he said I think) and he did so with respect to the protestors. The backlash directed towards him was completely inappropriate. Today, I was walking back from the library holding a cup of coffee from starbucks because I knew I would be pulling an all nighter to study for my microbiology exam. One of the protestors singled me out of all the students walking and said that, And this is the perfect example of white privilege right here, and commented on the fact to those around her that I was holding a starbucks cup and was wearing a shirt that displayed the letters of my greek organization. And keep in mind this was me rushing back to my room only to get my textbook, not saying anything to them. What does my appearance have to do with the message that these protestors are trying to spread? Honestly, I am 100% in support of the right to keep and bear arms (2nd amendment) ESPECIALLY when it is a police officer, but I never have shared that opinion publicly because nobody asked, and until today was completely neutral about the protesting situation. I do not now how it is effective to come on to a college campus and harass students by making them feel self conscious about their persona/appearance or how it pertains to the events that have occurred in Saint Louis over the last few months. What did I do? Kept walking. I sure as HELL am not going to listen to what they have to say now and I do not want them on this campus. I didnt object to any protesting prior to this, even though it has caused inconveniences to my life such as blocking off Grand at 10:30 p.m. when Jake Livingston and I are coming back from the SON filming videos, or when the sirens/noises keep me up or make it difficult to get to class. However, if they cant tolerate ANY opposing opinions (isnt that the point of the so called scheduled discussion that was supposed to take place? pretty sure a discussion means sharing opinions) and if they are going to disrespect me and my fellow slu students, such as Eric Whitman who was also directly disrespected and witnessed extreme disrespect towards our country and our flag, they have no place on this campus. As students at Saint Louis University, we have the right to receive our education in a safe environment. And to me that does not involve anything I have mentioned. Once again, I am not at all against the fact that people are protesting, but just how it has happened and that nothing is being done about some of the treatment towards SLU students- and I cant be the only one who feels this way. https://youtube/watch?v=je3tygDRYjs&feature=share
