one thing I learned from a week in the dome. we humans need to - TopicsExpress

one thing I learned from a week in the dome. we humans need to measure time. if we are given no cues for time, we create our own. as the days passed, people began greeting each other with good morning good morning seems to be some sort of default setting. at first that would be followed by an attempt to figure out if it was actually morning, afternoon, or night. we soon gave that up. the first time we saw someone, after one of us woke up, the greeting was good morning yesterday became any time before our last sleep... even if it was this afternoon in the outside world. unless that time was multiple sleeps ago. then it became back when events of the early days seem so remote that we can barely remember them. as individuals we developed our own methods of telling time. I had my own time needs, which, unfortunately, bore no relationship to time in the dome. I wear two watches. my left watch is set on race time. I use it to know when I have a function to perform, and where we are in the race. my right watch is set on central time. that way I would know when the stories of the race would arrive. it was often a surprise to find out that my morning was happening at 1600 or 1700 your time. subtracting 3 hours off my right watch would give me Alaska time. the right watch times are not worth much, as they have little application to life in the dome. except, every time it hits 0730 I take the next pill out of my pill container. for the left watch to keep race time, I need to know how many days to add. since there are no days, as outside world people know them. my calendar is my pill container. the last empty slot is the current day. if I learned anything from my time in the dome; biosphere is not on my bucket list. laz
