reading lafcadio hearn (b1850-d1904) again. he wrote so beautifully about new orleans. i found a passage where he mourns the rich local cultures being lost to greedy outsiders and american homogenization. since everyone around me seems to be particularly dismayed lately about the brooklyn style hipster invasion, and over-development and gentrification, (including myself, despite being a recent yankee transplant and part of the problem in somes eyes, surely) i found this oddly comforting. its always been there. theres something always being lost. and yet, new orleans still breathes magic and mystery.
