saw a sudden flurry of activity in the street this morning. It turned out to be one of those adorable unlikely animal friendships: a hawk was playing with a squirrel! They were playing, Catch the Squirrel. The squirrel got away (before I could get the camera), but I was very pleased to see that the hawk stuck around. He perched in the walnut tree that hangs over the street long enough for me to get a few passable pictures. Note, especially, the one in which hes looking directly at the camera. Ive known, intellectually, that raptors have binocular vision to help them with depth perception. But I dont think Ive ever seen both eyes at once.
