#scottsfab50. A 50 day exercise in thankfulness. Day 9. To quote ABBA: Thank you for the music. Yes, if you know me at all, you know I LOVE music. Pretty much all kinds. (Okay, not the worlds biggest opera fan, but I like operatic things, and certain operas.) My music collection would give many people whiplash. Well, not Dave Langdon, He and I grew up loving it all. As a former disc jockey, I willingly embrace the term frustrated musician. I can carry a tune with help but thats another reason Im thankful: Ive been surrounded by talented musicians who have shared their gifts with me. In my own house, Amanda and Tamar. At McKendree, folks like Robert Neal, Jim Barker, Alexandra Kaye, Mike Boetje, Karin Dronenburg, Jonathan Parker, and the rest of the gang who are willing to provide the backbone to my theatrical visions. At school, Renee Sargent and Sonya Harris (Band and Chorus, respectively) who help me do things like #PCAGodspell. Hes not on FB, but Bob Jones-thanks for getting me to the Old City Bar. I love what I hear from McKendrees chorus under Jane Burke. I so thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with Shannon Nesbit. And I am so honored to call Karen Smith friend. See what you started? From the Big Band Jazz I encountered with my grandparents, to the early rock and roll I listened to with Mom Despins, Dad Piehler, and Aunt Jean, its been a wonderful discovery process. Shout out to Michael McGowan, for showing me the beauty of Jazz. My cousin Brian lets me know whats out there on the cutting edge. I still love discovery. My trip to Europe brought me to the symphonic metal of Epica. The Internet introduces me to new stars, like Sam Smith. Or regional acts like The Infidelities from LI. Great stuff, Michelle Turk! Thanks for the heads up, Bryan! And I love connecting with musicians on line. Nothing like talking pinball with TSO guitarist Chris Caffery. Ill share something with you. The one Pandora station I created thats about perfect. Freddie Freeloader Radio, seeded from the great Miles Davis track. Classic instrumental jazz. pandora/station/228425572271282801 Ill let Peter Gabriel get the last word, from his brilliant acceptance speech at the R&R Hall of Fame. “Watch out for music. It should come with a health warning. It can be dangerous. It can make you feel so alive, so connected to the people around you.” “And occasionally, it can make you very, very happy.”
