sent to: letters@sltrib Babysitting Teachers During this time of year, our legislature once again underfund education, and many people, rather than blaming their legislators, begin grumbling that teacher are overpaid and are the problem, so if you are you sick and tired of high-paid teachers whose hefty salaries drive-up taxes while they only work nine-months a year? It’s time we pay them for what they do – babysit! We can get that for minimum wage. So let’s pay the teachers $7.25 an hour and only for the hours they work, not for any of that silly planning time before or after school, or for any of the supposed hours they may work at home grading papers. We will just pay them from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., minus 30 minutes for lunch, this equates to just 6.5 hours a day, which at $7.25 an hour, equals about $47 a day. So each parent should pay $47 a day for a teacher to babysit their child. Now, say teachers on average baby-sit 25 students a day (low average), that is $47 multiply 25, which equals $1,175 a day. At 180 days a year (with no vacation, teachers do not earn a paid vacation, like you do) that is $211,500 a year per teacher. This can’t be correct! There must be something wrong! There sure is! According to the 2010-11 National Center for Education Statistics, the average Utah teacher annual salary is approximately $47,000, or $261 for each of the 180 days they are required to teach, $10.40 per student per day, or $1.61 per student per hour. That is a very inexpensive babysitter, and they educate your children as well! If you were able to follow and compute the math in this letter, thank a teacher. Better yet, call your legislators, their on vacation right now, and give them your views of underpaid teachers and their underfunding of education by in Utah.
