so been doing a bit of bioinformatic searching this sunday and an interesting thought struck me as i was searching through some databases on miRNA. a gene im interested in is potentially targeted by 40 different miRNAs however one of these miRNAs which targets my gene of interest also potentially targets 50 other genes. therefore if one of these 50 other genes gets up regulated then they may affect the expression of my gene of interest because they may sequester alot of the miRNAs which would normally target my gene and decrease its expression. None the really complicated thing is that these other 50 genes may have nothing to do with my gene of interest ie they dont interact lie in the same signalling pathway yet they can affect my gene of interest. So my question is how the hell does the cell actually regulate anything as if the above scenario is even half right then gene regulation is almost infinently more complex than is actually appreciated. I need a strong drink :)
