sorry for the lull here... very busy.... I will be back to share more about how my teaching experiences have been... in the meantime, I am looking for suggestions of books or online resources for substitute paraprofessionals assigned to children with autism. I found myself assigned to a kindergarten child who has no set curriculum or daily structure and pretty much spent my day corralling him and trying to find ways to translate what the other kids in the room were doing into activities that would hold his attention. I am not trained in special ed, and I was shocked that there was no plan for him -- he had a lot of physical energy and wanted to engage in the classroom activities, but found it hard to stay focused. I let him move around as much as I could get away with it because I found he was calmer when he could move - and I sometimes sang things to him, such as the days of the week, which he seemed to enjoy... Worst experience of the day, though - I was told by the classroom teacher to put him on the special van at the end of the day when in fact he was supposed to be picked up by his foster mom - who was in the building - Luckily the van was late and while someone checked for me on what the delay was, we found out he was NOT supposed to get on the bus... Holy Crap... apparently no one told the classroom teacher, either... can you imagine what would have happened???
