thanks to Richard Coles we have been made aware that today It is the Feast of St Angela Merici. From Richards research we are aware of the following : She was born in the 15th C near Brescia, and after being orphaned was raised by a rich uncle. When she was thirteen she fell into an ecstasy and the Virgin Mary came to see her with her dead sister and they encouraged her to join the Franciscans as a lay sister. She was terribly austere, rubbing soot into her golden hair lest it excite admiration, living on a diet of vegetables and water, and having possessions, not even a bed, because ‘the Son of Man had nowhere to lay His head’. She also had a photographic memory and could recall with perfect ease every text she read, so she founded a school which became very renowned. On day, in another ecstasy, she saw a host of maidens ascending a golden ladder going up to heaven. They had lovely headdresses and angels played suitable background music until Jesus appeared and commanded Angela to form a religious community. The Pope agreed and, in another ecstasy, St Ursula appeared to her and said she would be its patroness. Angela was so pleased she levitated up to the ceiling. So began the Ursulines, a teaching order which flourishes to this day. ... Dont you just love these fairy stories !
