the full quote about the gospel from my new book Ghost Towns I am often accused of preaching a grace that is “too cheap” (as in, free). The common accusation is that I count the blood of Christ as too “common” (for too many people) and show it disrespect by proclaiming that Jesus freely gave the same gift, pre-opened to all mankind. When I think about what the Father has done to the world through the Son, by the Holy Spirit it makes me weep. Such love that would humble itself to put on sarx (flesh, the dirty kind) and live as one of us, learning from us, teaching us, coming into our darkness and taking all that we are and healing it. The gospel is the most beautiful message in the world. He came into our darkness, and we killed him for it. So he brought us into His death, went into our hell, found us and brought us home. To count this gospel as “cheap” is to count Jesus Christ as “cheap”. O that we should all be so “cheap” in our presentations of his irresistible grace, in our dissertations of his atonement, and in our liturgies about his resurrection. Jesus is more than the sum of Christmas and Easter, He is everything—in all and through all to quote Paul. To call that “cheap” requires a level of confidence I am not prepared to assert on this journey we call spirituality.
