the little purple forget-me-nots that are scattered among the thick clover are a reminder from God that he has not forsaken us as the last few days of winter slowly creeps by. Its just one of the first signs of brighter, fresher days coming just around the corner. Another is the sound of the tractor gearing down as the farmer pulls it right up near the kitchen door to hop off for a swig of cold water. Daddy would hollar for us to come out and rinse out the fertilize spreader to keep the granulated chemicals from rusting it. Id jump off the back porch in one leap, yelling back to Shirley that I was going with Daddy. Climbing up on the fender I was ready for the rest of the evening switching out from the spreader to the disc, opening gates and doing anything I could to save him that extra step. He was hard to keep up with. His step was swift and light. Partially from being in a hurry and the other from loving what he was doing. Having a plan laid out in his head for the day and knowing the limit for each task before milking time. The cows would all be standing huddled close to the barn, except one. Celia had her moments and loved to be lead to the barn, standing alone until someone walked over the hillside and herded her on up before the gate was closed. She didnt realize that plus her lack of giving a substantial amount of milk shortened her days at the Lands dairy. She was really pretty and gentle but a dairy farmer dont need a good pet. Shoveling and scooping was part of my job after the milking was done and while most didnt think that would be an attractive way to end the day I still whistled all the way back to the house with the same pep in my step as my daddys just a few feet behind.
