the scale the recent flashflood disaster in hills of uttaraakhand has been seen for the first time in history. The historical records show that the most disastrous flood in upper reaches of Ganges occured in 1894 when in the upper reaches of a stream of Alaknandaa, the Birahi was blocked by a gigantic landslide for about one year. the huge flood occured when the lake was outbursted. since than more than 150 events of flesh flood of different size occurred till today in the upper catchements of Ganges-Alaknanda. The most disastrous among than had been the Belakotchi flashflood event of 1970, after that Kanodia, 1978, Konthaa 1979... But the scale of disaste of present event places it most disastrous in the known histry of Uttaraakhand. Primafacy I have observed followin 4 most promintent causative factors : 1. Exeptionally high snowfall in the winterS: Due to this the water volume of the rivers was incresed considerably in the summers due to high melting rate of snow 2. preponond of monsoon: It is very rare phenominan that the summer monsoon has reached in thee Uttarakhand hills in the IInd weak of june. due to this the unmelted snow in the upper reaches is melted suddenly due to rains..This again incresed the volume of water in the rivers considerably. 3. Hydroprojects: Large number of Hydroprojects are being constructted in the valleys of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi.. the muck disposal of these projects, though illegal but being directly disposed off in the rivers, In rains this much directly comes in the rivers. the coctail of Muck and water has increased the quantity of water multifold. 4. New settlements in the riverbanks, in flodd plains of last floods.: The tendency of developing new colonies, hotels in the riverbanks has been observed in last few decades. Even The setllements are have come out in almost everytownship on the floodplains of 1970 and 1978 flood.s Besides this a large number of roads are being constructed aur are being widened in the hills. the much disposal again id done down in the rivers. This has also increased the volume of water in the rivers.
