the sentinel assam,,, Violence erupts in BTAD 2 23 people dead so far, shoot at sight ordered, Army deployed in violence–hit areas, curfew clamped in Kokrajhar, Chirang and Baksa, hundreds of villagers flee BY OUR BUREAU & IANS GUWAHATI/KOKRAJHAR/NEW DELHI, May 2: Violence started by a Bodo militant group yesterday has taken a turn for the worse in the entire BTAD region on Friday with the killing of at least 23 people in the last 24 hours. Many houses were torched by miscreants in different parts of the Bodo heartland, forcing people to flee their homes and villages. At least 12 people were killed in Baksa district’s Narayangoorie and Nongkekhagrabari villages in fresh incidents of violence on Friday. On Thursday night, at least 11 civilians were killed and three injured when the NDFB (S) militants opened indiscriminate fire in two villages of the BTAD region. The incidents took place at Narsingbari and Balapara Tulsibil areas of the BTAD. “Armed cadres belonging to the anti–talk faction of the NDFB barged into houses of these villages and fired indiscriminately, killing people, including two women,” said Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) AP Raut. He said the injured persons were shifted to a local hospital. The State government deployed the Army and the paramilitary forces in the violence–hit areas to assist police to control the situation. “Three columns and four columns of the Army have been deployed in Kokrajhar and Baksa districts respectively. Curfew has also been clamped in Kokrajhar, Chirang and Baksa districts,” sources said, adding, Shoot at sight order has also been issued in violence–hit areas. Talking to reporters, Muhammed Sahiyas Ali of Balapara Part–I, who survived the attack, said he lost his mother, wife and his child. He further said armed miscreants numbering about twenty broke open the door of his house and opened indiscriminate fire on them, killing all his family members on the spot and also attacked the nearby houses in the village. “Today we have sent 10 companies of the Central paramilitary forces. With this the total strength of Central forces in the State will be 43,” Joint Secretary (NE) in the Union Home Ministry Sambhu Singh told The Sentinel. TOP
