todays Angel of the Day is Miss Lila Flowers. since i didnt have her at Christmas last year, i never got to take a picture of her with a halo. but carol sawyer graciously made an angel of lila for me! :) long time bug fans will know the story of this fearless and remarkable old girl, but i will tell it again. she was truly something. i saw a cat on the NYC Death Rown that touched my heart and her name was Miss Daisy. i found a rescue, Feline Rescue of Staten Island, that would pull her for me, did the application, interview, my vet told them she wanted to be reincarnated as one of my cats, and best of all, shed be driven up to CT where i could pick her up. sadly, the very senior, very fragile daisy died that very morning. so i agreed to take another senior named Nickel who had come out of NYC and in an incredible blow, he too died as he was to leave the vet and come to me. so hey, third times a charm, right? i found a cat named Laila on the Urgent Cats list, a senior found staggering around someones backyard in the Bronx. she wobbled was what her report said. something in her eyes spoke to me, so i tried a third time and picked Laila up in CT, renaming her Lila and adding the Flowers as a nod to Miss Daisy. she wobbled all right! one of her hind legs kept going out from under her but it never stopped her for a moment. she lived in a pretty yellow bedroom until i was sure she was OK and i took the time to get all the knots out of her fur and get to know her. when she came out of the room, she was immediately boss of the house. if anyone so much as went near her shed swipe them. a tough new yorker! i tried to keep her upstairs, given her weak hind end, but shed come downstairs anyway, much to my amazement, and go back up too when she wanted to. a wonderful Bug fan asked if she could send Lila a staircase so she could get on and off the bed by herself, so that gave lila the independence she so loved. she had one damaged ear that was always cocked to one side and she had a face that made Grumpy Cat look cheerful, but she was much nicer than her grumpy expression. i just adored her! she was really a mess. she had the ear, the leg, then she had kidney failure and hyperthyroidism, and if that wasnt enough, one day she developed a hernia, out of which her bladder pushed! and however much she ate, she lost weight and finally after only 3 months, it was clear her little body was failing her. dropped from 7 to 5 lbs, and she could no longer support herself in the back. she kept trying, though. when she died, the vet sent a big bouquet of flowers in honor of miss lila flowers. she touched a lot of pwople with that spirit! if any cat had the spirit to go on, it sure was miss lila flowers. but her body had failed her in too many ways. after her last vet appointment, i took her home and set her down in a field of yellow marsh marigolds in my backyard so she could know the joy of the suns warmth in a safe place instead of the streets of new york. she got to walk among the flowers, best she could. it was really hard saying goodbye to such a fiercely strong spirit. i knew when i got her that she would be hospice care, but i had hoped she would last longer than 3 months. no matter, i hope they were the best 3 months of her life. my feisty girl is the boss angel of them all.
