via The Oceania Project This is the encounter during which we recorded the song of a Humpback whale we named Gabriel after the archangel. We have re-mastered and uploaded Gabriels song to SoundCloud. Gabriel was pursuing and joyfully serenading a female as he darted about below our research vessel. soundcloud/iwhales/gabriel Humpback whale songs are passed down over generations and evolve in a similar fashion to the verbally transmitted tribal lore of Australian Aboriginal culture from where the term Songlines is derived. wikipedia.org/wiki/Songlines We began recording and documenting the song of the East Australian Humpback whales in 1992, several years after establishing The Oceania Project oceania.org.au The Oceania Project is an independent, non-profit research organisation dedicated to the conservation and protection of whales, dolphins and the oceans. From our archive, which comprises hundreds of hours of whale song, we have compiled the most beautiful songs of the most skilled singers. We chose the years 1992, 1994, 1998, 2001 and Gabriels song from 2008. SonglinesOfTheWhales.org The CD has been signed to a UK label aqualise and the tracks can also be listened to in full at soundcloud/iWhales
