well, had another insomniac night.. managed to sleep from 10 til 4, so not too bad.. but awake from 4 on so broke down and turned on a documentary film, about a woman who survived the Holocaust..and actually ended up marrying the American soldier who was the first person she saw after the Allies ended the war.. Her name was Gerda Weissmann Klein, and the film is called One Survivor Remembers, an HBO documentary. She and her husband, Kurt Klein, became advocates of Holocaust education and human rights, dedicating most of their lives to promoting tolerance and community service. I always feel something that is difficult to describe in my spirit, a pain that is sharp and harsh in my heart, because of the Jewish ancestry of my own husband and children, when I read or view any materials about the Holocaust and the terrible things that occurred during this time, in Germany and the surrounding areas, and especially in the concentration camps. The first book that I ever read regarding this was The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom. I read it many times because I was riveted by this womans story and I was fascinated by the fact that she was able to find forgiveness and love for her German captors, in fact the very people who had caused the deaths of her dear sister and her Father and other loved ones. A person in my immediate family had the honor of visiting the Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C. and was moved to deep emotion by what he saw and experienced there. This has been a subject that the children, knowing of their Jewish ancestry(Their Grandfather was Jewish), have constantly been fascinated by. We have had many conversations about it and they have read several books about children that endured this time in our history. As a person in Recovery who has had experience with forgiveness and redemption, I think it is amazing that a person can move on and have such happiness after events such as these.Gerdas story is certainly one that I think others should view. It is on HBO OnDemand right now. I suggest that anyone interested watch this awesome film.!!
