….what is fun?........ ......in this country it has to be football (soccer for some of us)….this week I met up with my cousin Sergio for lunch (incredibly good food), beers and eventually a sunset over Lisbon, one of the few family members with whom I have connected on a regular basis over the last few years……even though he’s much younger than I (+/- 20 years) and apart from fitting into all the criteria’s of being a nice guy in every sense of the word.....throw in as well a great sense of humour (often a low key sly) and a profound knowledge of both Lisbon and football….to uphold my claim that he’s a nice guy, he will modestly/humbly mumble he is the editor of the Record newspaper which is dedicated to football and little else other than advertisements and naughty classifieds ….. ……how much is football integrated into the daily culture?…..it almost seems there is always a football game going on somewhere, I think there are more games being played per day than babies being born, considering the recessive economic difficulties in Portugal, my cynical observation is not farfetched ……also, pretty much every restaurant has a TV showing a football game and with this, when couples enter a restaurant, men will always sit facing the TV screen as the soccer widows speak to their in-attentive catatonic football watching spouses….another annotation is the rivalry between two geographically close Lisbon football teams Benfica & Sporting….. Benfica being born from the ashes of the locals and Sporting created by a rich entrepreneur……hence, the cliché both political and cultural labelling of poor versus rich syndrome…..indirectly, it resonates the class distinction in Portuguese society…. ……how to make this a better place?.....what the world needs are more inept heroes like Scott Sterling………who you ask?....he is a hapless football goalie who despite unfortunate circumstances managed to be “the man, the myth, the legend” after going through 5 excruciating penalty kicks……watch the video, I highly recommend it… ….on a personal note……when back in Montreal, anytime my cell phone rang and it displayed the calling number as starting with the 613 area code, I knew that I had to stop whatever I was doing……for this was no ordinary call, it was my brother calling to tell me some joke he had heard…..as I pressed the green button on the phone and accepted the call, upon hearing his hello we would immediately start laughing even before the joke was told…….genetic code aside, one thing we have in common is a sense of humour….and with this Manny, here is me sending you a 613 joke via Facebook as this video is dedicated to you…..laugh away kid, I know I did and thought of you when doing so..... https://youtube/watch?v=8F9jXYOH2c0&list=FLEpqur8dCedNmxUKWwslrSg&index=1&spfreload=10
