y Shamako Noble Aiko Shirakawa San Joses original B-Girl. Organizer, Educator, Leader and Mentor for many who went to become all of those things themselves. Today we honor B-Girl Aiko. A true staple of the San Jose Hip Hop and Dance scene for pretty much since it had one. The first open mic/show that I went to in San Jose was thrown by Aiko in 1996. It was at an ongoing event called Plan B. She was also one of the key founders and movers of the Open Mic Sessions at the Hank Lopez Center in East Side San Jose. Ask anyone who has been around San Jose or the Bay for any extended period of time and they can tell you about Aiko. Shes one of those local founders of Hip Hop that never quite gets ALL the credit she deserves. And of course, this is just a drop in the bucket. Shes a talented dancer, a mother and gifted vocalist even though she wont let on about that if you dont already know. Her leadership, guidance, courage and support helped to lay the foundation for many cultural heads in San Jose, and helped to lay the basis for many artists, promoters and Hip Hop educators to come. In fact, Aiko was Hip Hop education before there was even such a thing. So today, we honor and acknowledge the contributions of a dancer who isnt just a role model for women in Hip Hop, but really more of a role model for what it means to say that I am Hip Hop, to live that life, and to carve a path way for others to do so. B-Girl Aiko, WE SALUTE YOU!!!
