yo trigger warning lol, political stuff (i would argue just economic stuff but either way). i would very much like someone to challenge my thoughts on this so please read. i present to you a case study on the raising of minimum wage and how it affected job creation etc. from berkeley. i heard kids are smart there. davidcard.berkeley.edu/papers/njmin-aer.pdf ive been saying this for a while now, but basically businesses already hire as few people as possible to operate (on a min wage job scale at least). i.e. as a kid you wouldnt let all your friends help you run your lemon aid stand or grass cutting service because youd have to share the money. increasing the minimum wage doesnt mean anyone needs to get fired because business owners already have lean staffing practices. (but maybe workers will get fewer hours: aei.org/publication/the-law-of-demand-and-the-minimum-wage-it-applies-to-number-of-hours-worked-not-the-level-of-employment/ but this isnt a huge issue, imo, doesnt really matter). the only things ive read against this idea are surveys of CFOs and other hire-ups who have every incentive to convince you that they will fire their workers if you insist they pay their workers more. in reality, theyve already hired the bare bones staff they need (based on simple economics, why waste money on unnecessary staff?) and firing people would indeed hurt their businesses. (more on this from the washington post: washingtonpost/posteverything/wp/2014/07/05/no-raising-the-minimum-wage-doesnt-lead-to-layoffs/) minimum wage needs to keep up with inflation or the purchasing power of the people who work these jobs will decrease year after year (min wage would be $20/hour if it had kept up with inflation) perpetuating the gap between the rich and the poor. (more on this from the department of labor. cool charts: dol.gov/minwage/minwage-gdp-history.htm) also, if you think minimum wage jobs are just for college students and its not a big deal because they just need money to shop on the weekends or whatever, look at the chart on page four of this bureau of labor statistics document to see the demographics of minimum wage workers: bls.gov/cps/minwage2013.pdf the only other argument i can think of at the moment is that increasing the minimum wage will allow people to stay comfortable at those jobs and they wont have an incentive to become more valuable members of society. most people who work these jobs do not plan on earning minimum wage for the rest of their lives, that is dumb. not to appeal to emotion, but people working these jobs are often in situations where they are trying to take the next step in life (single moms trying to get an education, legal (lol not getting into this) immigrants trying to start new lives for their families, all of which i have worked side by side with). and even if theyre not who are you to judge they still have to eat and pay for housing. honestly someone give me counter arguments because i feel like people are making this harder than it needs to be. (check out seattle btw min wage is $15/hr cool if you like seattle so much why dont you marry it) also meanwhile corporations are receiving massive amounts of welfare in disguise by paying their workers so little that they depend on our tax dollars to EAT: youtube/watch?v=-rtySUhuokM THINK ABOUT THE WAY YOU SPEND YOUR MONEY! dang it why didnt i post this before nov lol oh yeah and the military argument - you really think a fry cook deserves to get paid more than a member of the armed forces john???? no lol pay them more too!!! guys super rich people are controlling us.
