I read in Korean from the ROK Army Daily Tribune a column of a nK defector Jo-Chun-Guk revealing the burgeoning of a market economy -- and as somewhat of a corollary, the accelerated increase in connectivity vis-a-vis information and a rather democratic paradigm -- that has happened to be the case in a place called Pyongsong, geographically located to attract people some of whose final destinations to Pyongyang have been halted by the pass inspection conducted there. This bargaining-type deal marketplace which resembles that of many versions of our own, consists of such trade as, but are not limited to, car repair shop, clothing stores, people for temporary employment for such services as fixing, tending, etc., and also of South Korean products of cosmetics, fashion, and entertainment, those of which have been officially prohibited but of which also have been always distributed to some extent in a clandestine manner and accessed by government officials whose socioeconomic status leaves them content without sufficient incentive to overthrow the regime -- not that they easily can -- even if their ideologies are challenged and their perspectives widened. The people at such marketplace are highly defensive and sensitive towards the dismantling of the functioning economy, especially as certain people economically benefited handsomely on such platform, and this renders alongside, the dilemma on the side of the regime which has to weigh two evils (or goods from our perspective) in such a precarious standing on both domestic and international levels. It is very encouraging to learn that the nK populace are aware of the economic status by which our lives are defined in a successful democratic society where there are less impediments to stall a positive economic, cultural, academic, political development. (I should though highlight the qualifier less so that the problems of inequality and others are not left completely under the shadows.) Being in the Army gives me at least some perspective as to how it feels like to be oppressed under a systematic pressure to abide by so many debilitating factors such as regulations and rules set up to steer an organization to a particular direction. Because the ROK Armys standing as an organic entity is formed by and for its country according to our understanding from history that leaving the country susceptible to the whims of malevolence materialized most symbolically by bullets, the debilitation is said to have been precipitated for a cause and purpose. In the case of nK, the direction is headed to favor only a strict minority, the triumvirate pigs, two of which are immortalized and one of which has recently been putting an effort to defend the reputation of his wife by executing two or was it three women who worked with her during the early days of her as a performer -- apparently and only a tad bit assumedly he is making up for his tiny penisland on which he is king. Let me rest my case by saying that IF ... If he have been a student at St. Pauls or at any other place where he would have been accustomed to the song Simple Gifts in a caring environment, he would have steered his country and economy towards a more simple, harmonious, dynamic, and vibrant economy such as ours.
