youtube/watch?v=cPPSG_SpojY&sns=em As I listened to Joel O. This morning he spoke briefly of the writer of this song, and how it came about. He had lost 4 daughters on a voyage across the sea. He was not on that vessel, only his wife and 4 daughters. Later as he voyaged along the same route the captain told him as they passed the same spot his daughters lost their lives. The author looking down into the ocean began that song. He took the worst moment in his life to minister and by that action, this song has touched millions and been a source of strength. When I heard that on TV, I was flooded with intense emotion as goosebumps went through my body. The Holy Spirit moved me deeply right in my kitchen about to pour my coffee. Id never heard the whole song, nor had the verses in my memory. My how amazing, as the story behind the song ministers. Oh singers, writers musicians your calling on this side of heaven is so important. Give it all to God and move not only your Fathers heart, but in doing so you draw all men unto Him. Story behind the song, It is well with my Soul. Background This hymn was written after traumatic events in Spafford’s life. The first was the death of their only son from Scarlet Fever in 1870. Second was the 1871 Great Chicago Fire which ruined him financially (he had been a successful lawyer and had invested significantly in property in the area of Chicago which was decimated by the great fire). His business interests were further hit by the economic downturn of 1873 at which time he had planned to travel to Europe with his family on the SS Ville du Havre. In a late change of plan, he sent the family ahead while he was delayed on business concerning zoning problems following the Great Chicago Fire. While crossing the Atlantic, the ship sank rapidly after a collision with a sea vessel, the Loch Earn, and all four of Spaffords daughters died. His wife Anna survived and sent him the now famous telegram, Saved alone …. Shortly afterwards, as Spafford traveled to meet his grieving wife, he was inspired to write these words as his ship passed near where his daughters had died.[3] Bliss called his tune Ville du Havre, from the name of the stricken vessel.[4] The Spaffords later had three more children. In 1881, the Spaffords, including baby Bertha and newborn Grace, set sail for Israel. The Spaffords moved to Jerusalem and helped found a group called the American Colony; its mission was to serve the poor. The colony later became the subject of the Nobel prize winning Jerusalem, by Swedish novelist Selma Lagerlöf.[3]
