#zimbabwe EDITORIAL COMMENT: Congress should come up with effective programmes ift.tt/1zasfw2 The Zanu-PF 6th National People’s Congress kicks off today with a Politburo meeting that will review the proposed amendments to the Zanu-PF constitution. The much-awaited congress running under the theme “Accelerated Implementation of Zim-Asset” is taking place at a time when several party bigwigs have fallen by the wayside after being accused of plotting to topple President Robert Mugabe. Those that have failed to make it to the Central Committee include Vice-President Joice Mujuru, Cde Didymus Mutasa who is the party’s Secretary for Administration, Cde Dzikamai Mavhaire, Cde Simbarashe Mumbengegwi, Cde Sikhanyiso Ndlovu, Cde Angeline Masuku, Cde Francis Nhema, Cde Flora Buka and Cde Tendai Savanhu, among other Politburo members. It is now certain that the congress will usher in a new leadership for the party given what has been happening during the past three weeks or so. The proposed amendments to be reviewed by the Politburo will allow the President, Cde Mugabe, to appoint his deputies and the party’s national chairman. The amendments are expected to be endorsed by the Central Committee when it meets tomorrow. The congress which is expected to engage in decisive deliberations, will be officially opened by Cde Mugabe on Thursday. Prophets of doom had predicted a split of the party before the congress following revelations that some of the bigwigs that have since been ditched by the people during Central Committee elections, were plotting to unconstitutionally remove the President from Office. What is emerging is in fact, pointing to the contrary as the party is instead poised to emerge even stronger after the ‘cleaning exercise’ which was undertaken by the electorate. The recent events which have affected the party’s structures in all corners of the country, are a confirmation that the people are still wielding immense power hence they are deciding who should and who should not represent them in the Central Committee. We have no doubt that after the decisive congress, the party will emerge rejuvenated, reinvigorated and ready to accelerate implementation of Zim-Asset inline with the congress theme. What has been happening in Zanu-PF is not new to the politically mature. It is expected that before such a congress, there is some ‘cleansing or cleaning exercise’ to rid the party of undesirable elements who might have been causing disunity, sabotaging the party programmes or working with internal and external enemies. Some might want to ask why now but the answer is that this exercise is ongoing but is stepped up before events such as congress or general elections. It is every citizen’s hope that those that will assume leadership positions at congress have learnt from those that have been ditched by the people and will therefore not repeat the same mistakes. Leaders should not antagonise the people but should instead always work to unite them so that at the end of the day Zimbabweans have a shared vision. The ruling party’s leadership to emerge from congress should hit the ground running to ensure election promises are met. The people have been patient enough and its time the leadership delivers. More energy should be spent on implementing development projects as opposed to infighting within the party which resulted in factionalism. We want to once again implore congress to come up with effective development programmes that will accelerate implementation of Zim-Asset. ift.tt/1rbs2DU
