Živjo and welcome to our third FB lesson! First of all, we have to answer Testko’s question from yesterday. Formal way of “Kako si?” is “Kako STE?” You got it right, didn’t you :-)? NOTE “Kako ste?” can also refer to the 2nd person plural (you in plural). Example: - plural: KakO ste, mOji drAgi tečAjniki? (= How are you, my dear students?) vs. - formal: KakO ste, gospOd NovAk? (= How are you, Mr Novak?) PONOVIMO! (Let’s repeat!) a) Formalno: A: Dober dan. Jaz sem Ana Medved. (Medved is one of the typical Slovene surnames and it means “bear”.) B: Dober dan. Jaz sem Janez Novak. A: Me veseli. B: Mene tudi. A: Kako ste? B: Dobro, hvala. Pa vi? A: V redu, hvala. b) Neformalno: A: Živjo. Jaz sem Ana. B: Zdravo. Jaz sem Janez. (A greeting very used in the northeast of Slovenia. It is translated as “hello” in English, but it literary means“healthy or healthily”.) A: Me veseli. B: Mene tudi. A: Kako si? B: Super, hvala. Pa ti? A: Odlično. Slovenes are very curious people ;-). We always want to find out where do you come from: Od kod si? (NF) / Od kod ste? (F) NOTE NF = informal (neformalno) F= formal (formalno) Let’s answer it: Sem iz Slovenije, iz Ljubljane. (= I am from Slovenia, from Ljubljana.) NOTE Slovene has 3 genders: mOški (= masculine), žEnski (= feminine) in srEdnji (= neutral). Masculine nouns usually end with a consonant (računAlnik = computer), feminine in -a (tOrba = bag), neutral in -o or -e (kolO = bicycle, sOnce = sun). So, if you come from a “feminine” country, you have to change the ending -a to -e. Let’s take England for example: Anglija - Od kod si? - Sem iz Anglije. This rule also applies to the cities: Barcelona - Sem iz Barcelone. You have to add -a to the consonant if you come from a masculine country/city: Nepal, Madrid - Sem iz Nepala. / - Sem iz Madrida. Neutral nouns have to change the ending -o or -e to -a as well: Sarajevo - Sem iz Sarajeva. That’s it for today. Hvala in do kmalu :-)!
