السلام عليكم (Assalaam Alaikum) Dearest brothers and sisters Find the Khutbah for last weeks Friday. The audio file for the khutbah is online: https://drive.google/file/d/0B5yS6iSAYlghNnNzT1RnNHJOcms/edit?usp=sharing - Date: 8 November 2013 / 3 Muharram 1435 Author: Mohamed Al Saidy Translator: Nabeel Nasser Title: The month of Muharram Allah almighty says: Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them… [AtTawbah 9:36] Allah almighty has singled out four months of the year as sacred, and forbade the oppression of the people during them. Three of them are in sequence, namely, Dhu’l Qi’dah, Dhul-Hijjah and Muharram, and the fourth that is by itself Rajab And so the month of Muharram is one of these sacred months, It is the opening of the new year, the beginning of a new term. In the sunnah it is remembered for its high status and its preference. Let us reflect on its honour: It is one of the months of Allah and it is considered the best month to fast in after the month of Ramadan As described by the Prophet pbuh that it is the best fast after Ramadan. Imam Muslim narrated from Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet pbuh said: (The most excellent fast after Ramadan is Allahs month al-Muharram, and the most excellent prayer after the prescribed prayer is the prayer during the night) (Narrated by Muslim). Also, in the sahih referring to Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, who was asked about fasting the day of Ashura, he said: (I do not know Allahs Messenger pbuh singling out any days fast and considering it more excellent than another, except this day (meaning the day of Ashura) and this month, meaning the month of Ramadan. (Bukhari and Muslim). In the Saheeh of Muslim from Abu Qatada, may Allah be pleased with him, that a man asked the Prophet pbuh about the fast of Ashura, he said: (I seek from Allah that fasting on the day of Ashura may atone for the sins of the preceding year). So Why do we fast the tenth of Muharram? We fast it in thanks to Allah and in loyalty and honour of the prophets as was made clear to us by our Prophet, peace be upon him. IbnAbbas, may Allah be pleased with him reported that the Messenger of Allah pbuh arrived in Medina and found the Jews observing fast on the day of Ashura. The Messenger of Allah pbuh said to them: What is the (significance) of this day that you observe fast on it? They said: It is the day of great (significance) when Allah delivered Moses and his people, and drowned the Pharaoh and his people, and Moses observed fast out of gratitude and we also observe it. Upon this the Messenger of Allah pbuh said: We have more right, and we have a closer connection with Moses than you have; so Allahs Messenger pbuh observed fast (on the day of Ashura), and gave orders that it should be observed. (Bukhari and Muslim) In addition to this, we know it is better to fast the ninth of muharram with it or the day after. But be aware of innovations of Ashura: Many people have innovated many things relating to the day of Ashura, which are all rejected. Beware not to take it as a day of eid or a day of celebration to feast and to celebrate ... Beware also of doing what the Shia do; that is weeping and wailing and beating of one’s self, slapping their faces and tearing their clothes. All this is done in the name of grief over Hussein ibn Ali may Allah be pleased with him and his father and mother, which is contrary to the religion of Allah and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah pbuh; who has forbidden us from hitting ourselves and tearing our clothes and from following the ways and traditions of the days of ignorance. As reported in Muslim and Bukhari; the Messenger of Allah, pbuh, said: (He who slaps his cheeks, tears his clothes and follows the ways and traditions of the Days of Ignorance is not one of us. So these innovations are deviations from the traditions of the prophet and from the rightly guided ways. Oh true worshipers of Allah, this is Allah’s month of Muharram along with its virtues so stick to the traditions of the prophet pbuh and avoid all innovations. All praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds... والحمد لله رب العالمين
