معنى كلمة العلمانية العَلمانية تعني اصطلاحاً فصل المؤسسات الدينية عن السلطة السياسية، وقد تعني أيضاً عدم قيام الحكومة أو الدولة بإجبار أي أحد على اعتناق وتبني معتقد أو دين أو تقليد معين لأسباب ذاتية غير موضوعية،[1][2]. كما تكفل الحق في عدم اعتناق دين معيّن وعدم تبني دين معيّن كدين رسمي للدولة. وبمعنى عام فإن هذا المصطلح يشير إلى الرأي القائل بأن الأنشطة البشرية والقرارات وخصوصًا السياسية منها يجب أن تكون غير خاضعة لتأثير المؤسسات الدينية. تعود جذور العلمانية إلى الفلسفة اليونانية القديمة لفلاسفة يونانيين أمثال إبيقور، غير أنها خرجت بمفهومها الحديث خلال عصر التنوير الأوروبي على يد عدد من المفكرين أمثال توماس جيفرسون وفولتير وسواهما. ينطبق نفس المفهوم على الكون والأجرام السماوية عندما يُفسّر النظام الكوني بصورة دنيوية بحتة بعيداً عن الدين في محاولة لإيجاد تفسير للكون ومكوناته. ولا تعتبر العلمانيّة شيءًا جامدًا بل هي قابلة للتحديث والتكييف حسب ظروف الدول التي تتبناها، وتختلف حدة تطبيقها ودعمها من قبل الأحزاب أو الجمعيات الداعمة لها بين مختلف مناطق العالم. كما لا تعتبر العلمانية ذاتها ضد الدين بل تقف على الحياد منه، في الولايات المتحدة مثلاً وُجد أن العلمانية خدمت الدين من تدخل الدولة والحكومة وليس العكس.[3]. It also guarantees the right not to profess any particular religion and not to adopt a particular religion as the official religion of the state. In a general sense, this term refers to the view that human activities and decisions, especially political ones should not be subject to the influence of religious institutions. Secular roots back to the ancient Greek philosophy of Greek philosophers like Epicurus, but they came out in the modern sense during the European Enlightenment by a number of thinkers such as Thomas Jefferson, Voltaire and others. The same concept applies to the universe and celestial bodies when explaining the cosmic order in a purely mundane away from religion in an attempt to find an explanation of the universe and its components. Secularism are not considered something static but is updatable and air conditioning depending on the circumstances adopted by the states, and different application unit and supported by political parties or associations supporting them among the various regions of the world. It also does not consider itself against the secular religion but stand on the sidelines of it, in the United States, for example, found that served the secular religion of state intervention and the government and not vice versa.
