مقالة رائعة من الصحفي الفريدو ريلاندو حول بنزيما ودحول موراتا في مباراة الديربي وحيرة انشلوتي ترجموهااا Speaking to Carmen Colino, Real Madrid legend Paco Gento told AS that Karim Benzema needs to put his back into it a bit more, and that if he did he’d be brilliant. Spot on. That’s what’s missing. Benzema has the prerequisite – quality – but it’s not enough. A player of exquisite technique, the oft-repeated phrase among his advocates (to whom I would like to belong) is that he “links up well”. But he’s passive, he’s lazy. That’s the way he seems and that’s the way he is. Álvaro Morata came on for a while in the derby defeat to Atlético Madrid, replacing not Benzema but Isco (a criminal decision by Carlo Ancelotti), and the youngster made a real difference: he won the ball, he passed it, he brought penetration, connected with a terrific shot… Put simply, he gave Atleti something to worry about. Will Benzema keep his place? I assume so. I expect nothing else. It wouldn’t be the right time to drop him, “because that would torpedo his confidence”. There are some players it never seems to be the right moment to drop; for others, whenever is fine. It’s no secret that Benzema enjoys Florentino Pérez’s protection. The Madrid president travelled personally to Lyon to sign him, and he it was who lost his composure – again in Lyon – when he leapt up, hands on his head, to celebrate the 25-year-old’s goal against his former club. He has cleared the way for Benzema by selling Gonzalo Higuaín to Napoli. The Frenchman has a sheltered existence at the Bernabéu. Ancelotti is no fan of going against his boss, of that we’re all aware. But something that simply is not working here is Benzema: he isn’t putting in that bit of extra sweat and toil that Gento is asking of him. When we were young, we were taught about the Parable of the Talents. Benzema is the man who was given ten and came back with five; Higuaín, meanwhile, is the one who was given five and came back with ten. Of the headaches Ancelotti currently has, this would be the easiest to cure: either Benzema works a bit harder (even if only to please Gento) or Ancelotti leaves the president’s wishes to one side and is bold enough to be unbiased. Two solutions to just one problem.
