|| ॐ ह्रीं श्री मुनिसुव्रताय नमः || || Auṃ Hrīṃ Śrī Munisuvratāya Namaḥ || Jay Jinendra पण्डित दौलतराम कृत छहढाला CHHAHDHALA By Pandit Daulatram Original text in Braj + Hindi translation Hindi prose and poetic translations by Dr Jaykumar Jalaj Pandit Nathuram Premi Research Series Volume 39 First edition 2014, Second edition 2014 2014 24 x 18 cm 88 pages ISBN 978-81-88769-62-9 Paperback Rs. 100 navelgazing.net/2014/07/chhahdhala-by-pandit-daulatram.html Grave injustice has been done to medieval India and its scholarship, particularly to writings in the vernacular. Many indologists focus on works written in Sanskrit, Pali, Prakrit and Tamil, and tend to ignore works composed in the languages that followed them. Thus, Apabhramsha, Braj, Avadhi, Maithili, Bundelkhandi and many other pre-modern Indian languages have not been studied critically. To make matters worse, they are often misleadingly labelled as dialects of Hindi! Pandit Daulatram, a medieval Jain poet, lived in Hathras (UP) in the nineteenth century. He was part of the prevalent Braj weltenschaung. He was a stalwart of the North Indian Digambara lay scholar tradition. His writings directly encapsulate the essence of Jain teachings in elegant Braj verse. Not many would attempt to use poetic language to express the complex principles of a deeply ascetic faith. Few would succeed. Daulatram succeeds beautifully! He uses onomatopoeia to stirring effect. His poetry is meant to be recited aloud. His gift is being able to explain the most recondite concepts in the simplest manner using the least number of words. His Chhahdhala is the jewel in the crown of Jain writings in Braj. Divided in six sections, (literally - shields) the Chhahdhala explains the absolute reality of the universe as per the Jinas, true and false doctrines, the inevitability of liberation for those who seek lasting bliss, the path of enlightened perception, knowledge and conduct, the key role played by one’s own contemplation and the ideal conduct of a true renunciant. In ascending order of difficulty and increased awareness, the six shields provide respite from the slings and arrows of temporal life and help the seeker attain everlasting bliss of liberation. We are proud to publish the prose and poetic translations of this text, both done by Dr Jaykumar Jalaj, together in this book. The prose translation does a fine job of expressing the original Braj distich in simple and lucid Hindi, the poetic translation is meant to be read as an independent work. While the present translation is not the first ever translation of the Chhahdhala into Hindi, it possesses a vitality and completeness that come from penetrating intellect, profound understanding and crisp articulation. We are therefore delighted to publish this work as part of our ongoing Pandit Nathuram Premi Research Series. Copies of this book are available at our bookstore in Mumbai.
