আজ কারগিল যুদ্ধের সেই শহীদদের স্মরণ করি যাঁরা আমাদের দেশ ও স্বাধীনতা রক্ষা করতে প্রান দিয়েছিলেন । How many of us remembered our 527 Hoers who sacrificed their lives in the 60-day-long Kargil War ? The total area seized by the Pakistani intruders was between 130 km² – 200 km², including some strategically important mountain peaks. India responded with `Operation Vijay`, deploying a large number of troops. The Indian Army had to mount direct frontal ground assaults against prepared defenses of the enemy. It caused high casualty among our Jawans. Steep ascents had to be made on peaks as high as 18,000 feet. Any daylight attack was suicidal, attracting concentrated enemy fire from higher up. So, all the advances were made under the cover of darkness. Night temperature was often as low as −15 °C. Some of our Jawans nearly froze to death during such night operations. Our Jawans used INSAS (Indian Small Arms System, bore 5.56mm) rifles in this war for the first time. Supplying ammunition, water and food(that is the exact order of priorities of our Army in any battle field) to the advance lines, high on mountain, as well as bringing down wounded men were extremely difficult task. Many wounded Jawans could not endure the four / six hour down hill march in a stretcher. Important sectors of fighting were Tiger Hill, Tololing, Batalik-Turtok, Mashkoh valley. Finally our Army recaptured the lost territory on July 26, 1999, thus making it the `Vijay Diwas`. Kargil news stories and war footage were often telecast live on TV. This conflict became the first live in media war in South Asia. The young Kargil -War-heroes died fighting for India, a country they loved and swore to protect. Also, there were many unsung Heroes, whose tales of braveries are still discussed with reverence in our Battalions and Regiments. Not many lived to tell the tale. I met two such wounded men in the Command Hospital, Kolkata (One was Dutta, a Bengali, with three bullets in thigh and abdomen) It is difficult to suppress tears when they narrated their horrendous experiences and how their close friends died. Hai Mere Batan Ki Logo, Jara Ankh Me Bhar Lo Pani, Jo Shahid Huye Hai Unki Zara Iyad Karo Kurbani Lieutenant Saurabh Kalia (22 years) was one of the first martyrs. Lt.Kalia and five jawans were captured by the enemy and brutally tortured. Their mutilated bodies were returned to India after 22 days.
