After taking some comfort in treats offered and a few kind words, she has begun exiting from her kennel without the requisite snarling and snapping. She now pops out and her chubby body waddles easily into the backyard. Jessie remains wary of her surroundings, peeking over her shoulder as she walks, keeping a safe distance between us. But there are the small things: the way she sits on command when a treat is offered and feels suddenly comfortable enough to jump up and stick her nose in my pocket for more, the way her tail has finally moved from between her legs to wag slowly as she walks and wag excitedly when she meets a canine friend, the way she follows behind me as I search for a cozy blanket for her to sleep on and the way she curls up immediately when I say goodnight, the way she looks so solemnly into my eyes as I reach to pet her and tries her hardest to relax at the touch. I imagine she was once a well cared for family pet, now lost and alone. She has no one. But she hasnt given up. The small things Ive mentioned are really huge. But Ill never know the real Jessie. I do know she is strong and determined and reactive and confused. Ive no doubt that Jessie is a very loving girl. In the right hands, with enough time and patience, she will remember what its like to feel safe again. It took Jessie days to relax enough to do her business outside, but she did it... finally. A small thing, but huge. Jessie isnt thinking about the future, just taking it a shelter day at a time and trying her hardest to move on. I have a lot of respect for her. Jessie deserves so much more than the struggle with which shes faced.
