– Deputy President William Ruto has expressed confidence that the International Criminal Court (ICC) cases against him, Joshua arap Sang and President Uhuru Kenyatta will collapse. Ruto told a crowd in Kibingoti on his way to Nyeri on Friday that the lies and deceit that formed the basis of his trial had already started to crumble and he would soon be a free man. The Deputy President, who was on his way to open the Agricultural Society of Kenya show in Nyeri, asked Kenyans to continue praying for them to be acquitted of the crimes against humanity charges resulting from the 2007-8 post election violence. “I just want to say thank you very much for praying for us. You can already see that our prayers have started being answered based on what happened,” he said. “But we will continue praying and I know that that case will disappear and we will come back here and continue working.” This is the first time Ruto was speaking about the ICC cases after pleading not guilty to the charges in The Hague on Tuesday. He jetted back to the country on Thursday morning after his case was adjourned on Wednesday for lack of a witness, but declined to speak about the case at the time. Kenyatta has also made pronouncements to the effect that the ICC case will collapse. He made the remarks on Wednesday in Kwale where he told Kenyans not to worry. Ruto and Sang’s trial will continue next Tuesday with reports indicating that the absentee witness was already in The Hague. Ruto at the same time took a swipe at former Prime Minister Raila Odinga for pushing for a referendum accusing him of attempting to use the vote for his own personal gain. He said that Odinga wanted to use the referendum to push for a change in Kenya’s voting pattern in order to quash the will of the majority. He instead urged the former Premier to focus on nation building and forget about pushing for a referendum for his own gain. “He wants us to amend the Constitution but are you people ready to go to another ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ election?
