A phenomenology qualitative research to explore the practicing architects based in Hong Kong. The aim of study : The term of “Burnout” was first used by Graham Greene in his novel “A Burnt-out case” in 1960, in which the story of an architect was told by him who became “disappointed with his career and experienced a sense of growing loss of faith and vocation”. The loss of skilled architects to other profession is a global problem now. Depends on the survey report of recruitment (HAYS, 2013) the reports show that there is a clear shortage of architects based work in Hong Kong. Moreover, according the most updated statistics report from ARB, it’s appeared there is not significantly increase in new member of registered architects recent years. To bring up a skilled architect, there is a total of at least seven years of training. This is a long period of specialized training for the criteria of professions. If keep losing HK architects and lack of fresh blood enter to the profession, this sector will soon be in the serious shortage of precious workforce that have been invested with considerable time and resources. In long run, the Hong Kong will face the issue of sustainability of the architectural profession. The reasons of loss or shortage on architect are complex, it may include the factors of job burnout, socialization process, affectively committed component (AC), continuously committed component (CC) or normatively committed component (NC) etc. There are very few researches focusing on the area of architects’ occupations. This research aims at investigating the underlining phenomenon of HK architects and hopefully it contributes its efforts to the sector by providing insights on the issues in order to help lessening the severity of the situation. Invitation letter I am writing to invite you to participate in an interview about the practicing architects’ research in Hong Kong.
